A Step Towards Interoperability: Unity and Epic Games Announce Strategic Collaboration
In a sector historically marked by competition between platforms, Unity and Epic Games (developer of Unreal Engine) have recently announced a strategic collaboration.
The agreement, communicated on November 19, 2025, focuses on increasing opportunities for developers and advancing a more open future in gaming.
The partnership is structured around two main areas of integration: access to content and the expansion of commercial tools.
1. Opening Fortnite to Unity Content
One of the central points of the agreement is the integration of games developed with Unity within the Fortnite ecosystem.
Fortnite, with over 500 million registered accounts, has evolved into a vast social and content-creation platform.
This move will allow Unity developers to:
Increase their audience: Publish their titles in an environment with an already consolidated user base.
Participate in the creator economy: Access the Fortnite Creator Economy and benefit from the success generated by their creations.
This integration aims to provide an additional, high-profile distribution channel for the Unity developer community.
2. Unity Commerce Expands to Unreal Engine
The second component of the collaboration concerns the extension of Unity’s cross-platform commerce solution to include support for Unreal Engine.
Unity provides a suite of tools for managing the commercial aspects of games, including digital catalogs, payment provider integration, and web store management on PC, mobile, and browser.
With this expansion, Unreal developers will gain:
Greater choice: An alternative and comprehensive solution for commercial operations, including pricing strategies, promotions, and live operations.
This additional support will be available starting early next year and aims to offer Unreal developers greater flexibility in how they manage monetization and product distribution.
The Context: Interoperability and Growth
The leaders of both companies have framed this collaboration as a necessary step toward building an open and interoperable metaverse.
The stated goal is to move beyond closed systems to create an environment where choice and cooperation drive growth for all participants in the development ecosystem.
