Godot 4.7: the most important news of the new update
After years focused primarily on stability, Godot 4.7 marks a new stage of maturity for the open-source engine, introducing features designed to improve both visual quality and developers' workflows.
AreaLight3D: more realistic lighting
One of the most notable additions is AreaLight3D, a new node dedicated to rectangular light sources.
Thanks to this feature, developers can achieve more natural lighting effects, softer shadows, and more realistic reflections without relying on emissive materials and Global Illumination.
The new technology also makes it easier to create glowing signs, screens, and illuminated windows.
The new Asset Store arrives
The long-standing Asset Library is making way for the new Asset Store, which offers a more modern and intuitive browsing experience.
Among the main additions are improved asset previews, the ability to zoom preview images, and a rating system featuring reviews and scores. In addition, multithreading support helps prevent editor slowdowns during background operations.
Real-time shader previews
Developers working with shaders can now instantly see the results of their code directly within the editor, eliminating the need to constantly compile the project.
The benefits include:
Immediate feedback while writing code.
Faster workflows.
Less need to switch back and forth between code and the viewport.
Greater convenience when experimenting with visual effects.
More freedom for user interfaces
With the new Control node offset transforms, developers can finally animate interface elements without interfering with layouts managed by Containers.
This feature makes it possible to move, rotate, and scale buttons and panels, simplifying animations and transitions without affecting Container behavior.
DrawableTexture2D makes texture painting easier
Godot 4.7 also introduces DrawableTexture2D, a new API that greatly simplifies real-time texture editing. The feature is more accessible to newcomers and makes it easier to implement drawing and painting systems without relying on Viewports or RenderingDevice.
HDR support
On the graphics side, Godot 4.7 adds HDR output support for Windows, macOS, Linux (Wayland), iOS, and visionOS.
This enables:
Richer and more vibrant colors.
More impressive lighting effects.
Greater contrast between light and shadow.
Visual quality closer to modern standards.
Developing games entirely on Android
Thanks to integration with the Godot Android Build Environment (GABE), developers can now create, export, and publish games directly from Android devices.
Gradle export support and improved GABE integration make it possible to complete the entire workflow from a smartphone or tablet, with particular attention given to XR devices.
Godot 4.7 continues the engine's path to maturity
Rather than introducing revolutionary changes, Godot 4.7 focuses on refining the developer experience with tools that make it easier and faster to turn ideas into reality.
With advanced graphics, interface improvements, and new features, this update represents another important step forward for one of the most popular open-source game engines available today.
